After Vodafone launches Radio DJ in Ireland how will they continue to justify their outlandish data charges? I had to go online while on-the-road in Carrigaline yesterday and was delighted with the speed of my six bars 3G connection but only did the bare minimum of email and browsing. Don't they realize that if I didn't feel I was getting screwed they'd actually earn much more from me? I personally wouldn't need Wifi if I had blanket 3G coverage at a reasonable price point. Yes, this is my second Vodafone rant in ten day but its so frustrating I need to let off steam...

I recently made the mistake of using the GPRS connection with my laptop over bluetooth, as I was stuck for a connection. It worked fairly well (i went through the ardously painful setup a few months back, but hadn't really used it).
Until, of course, the bill arrived. Vodafone charged about E4 per meg, +vat. I was quite heavily stung! I checked with the other networks with a view to moving. O2 never replied, and 3 told me that they weren't doing anything like this (no data connections) so couldn't tell me a price.
All quite poor. And that's before I get onto roaming rates- I'm just back from the states where I was paying almost twice the rates that my O2-using girlfriend was!

(a) all the people I've ever met who are happy with using their GPRS/3G connections, work for telcos and get it for free.
(b) see Andrew Odlyzko's research into the economics of billing and metering. The chilling effects of metering on usage, and in the end, on realised profits, is pretty well documented, but I guess Vodafone haven't read it yet...
