Browser based collaborative writing environment

Dr. Dan has come up with the coolest way yet I've seen of  using Grazr -

"As this screenshot shows, I have cobbled together a browser based environment for research and writing. I’ve combined Grazr (left side), iJot (right side), and the Performancing blog editing extension (bottom)."

I recall being vaguely aware of the Firefox trick for opening pages in the browser sidebar but never took note of the procedure. So I popped Dan an email and got full instructions back within a few hours -

  1. Navigate to the Grazr URL of your choice.
  2. Bookmark the Grazr URL.
  3. Open Firefox's Bookmarks directory and select the Grazr URL bookmark.
  4. Right click, select "properties" for that bookmark.
  5. Check the "Load this bookmark in the sidebar" box for that bookmark.

"Henceforth, said bookmark will open in said sidebar." To test it out I followed the instructions using the bookmark for the Open Irish Directory and it works a treat! You might also like to try a sidebar for the Boards.ie feeds.

As regards the collaborative writing environment Dan described above he followed up with a proviso -

"Unfortunately, the frameset hobbled the collaborative editing functions of iJot, so for a practical solution I'll have to return to the drawing board. However, the current frameset setup works fine with Grazr + www.pbwiki.com"

UPDATE: I just noticed that Dan has posted the full instruction to his other blog - DanToday and adds some advice for teachers -

"If your students are blogging, create an OPML reading list of their RSS feeds, put the list online and plunk it in a Grazr. Voilà: instant aggregation of your student's writing with links to their blog entries and comments."
