Watch out Twitter - Jaiku gets channels

Gareth Stack posted a thorough synopsis of Twitter and suggested two future uses - Group Management and Mobile Applications. At the same time Conor O'Neill was predicting that Jaiku's new channel feature would be "the disruptor that rockets them past Twitter... mini-IRC by mobile".

Within a few hours Alexia had setup a Dublin channel on Jaiku and I'd setup a Limerick one. Jaiku posts to a channel don't appear in your regular Jaiku stream which means they don't annoy people who aren't interested in that particular topic. Very nice! I'd practically ignored Jaiku since signing up, in favour of Twitter, but this functionality is winning me over.

James, if you haven't already, check out this excellent video of one of Jaiku's founders discussing the future of social networks; extremely eye opening stuff. I predict a bright future for these guys, despite twitters head start .

Finally got around to watching it last night Gareth and I have to agree, it was indeed thought provoking stuff. Probably something to do with the fact the guy has a background in sociology instead of tech. I'd go so far as to call it a 'must see' video for anyone involved in Web2.0 (which more and more equates to WebS.0cial IMHO ;-)
