OpenEir goes small scale

Over the last few weeks we've seen how OpenEir techniques can be used to map Ireland in extraordinary detail using a GPS receiver and the freeware appliation MyGPS. But that mapping has still been on a relatively large scale.

My intention over the next few weeks is to map a single Irish town in extreme detail, tagging every street, alleyway, office and shop with it's GPS coordinates. I also hope to add such multimedia elements as 360 degree panoramas and video tours. I make no secret of the fact that the inspiration for this is the brialliant series of Mad Maps of Irish cities which you used to be able to buy a few years ago. I don't know if you can still get them but unfortunately references to their domain (on pages like this) come up blank so, sadly, it appears like they've gone out of business.
