As I scraped through a degree in Computer Engineering at University of Limerick in the early 90s I observed that those who sailed through were mostly those who'd been hacking at code since their early teens. I used to wish I'd bought a computer ten years earlier because I was and still am fascinated by the craft. I often say that I just never had an aptitude for programming but I sometimes wonder if that's just a mental block and if I'd have developed one if I were exposed to it earlier in life.
I started pondering these questions anew upon reading Lifehacker's post about 7 lessons by Gus Mueller on how to become "an independent programmer - or in the other word, a software entrepreneur". It seems to me that there can hardly be a more perfect Independent Digital Lifestyle than that confered by the craft of programming the very machines which facilitate it.
I bookmarked that post too. If you want to overcome that mental block, there's no better way to test the waters than playing around with Perl, Python or Ruby. Problem is - if you try any of these you'll wonder why people go to the trouble of using Java , C or C++.

Well I'd been hearing so much about Ruby on Rails that I was wondering if it would be a good way to dip a toe back in the water. Would you recommend it Walter? Or is it all hype?

Haven't tried ruby but any of the so-called scripting languages are a good place to start.
