It's nearly 5 years ago now since I was offered €9,000 for a domain I had actively developed for a few years previous to that (no, I don't squat!). Foolishly perhaps I turned it down without even giving it consideration, but ironically never bothered to renew it afterwards as I moved the site to a more suitable address while rebranding.
I was reminded of this today when I went to register my first domain in ages. I finally decided to get a 'proper' address for this weblog so it can now be found at www.EirePreneur.com as well as the current TypePad URL.
I also registered www.OpenEir.org as a home for the Open Irish Directory project and the OpenEir Mapping project - two related grassroots efforts. Its important to emphasise that the OpenEir Directory is just a single instance of the top level of the Open Irish Directory. We should continue to use the latter label for the OPML hierarchy and I'll refer to 'my' version with the OpenEir moniker. Its worth repeating that every OID node manager should feel free to duplicate 'my' top level of the directory for their own websites (in case I keel over or anything!). In that way there will be multiple versions of the OID and it will be a truly distributed resource.
COngrats on a "proper" earl (as techie friends pronounce it :-)
