I met Robin Blandford for the first time last Saturday night at the Irish Blog Awards in Dublin. I've (virtually) known him for some time as the entrepreneur and outdoor adventure enthusiast behind the Geared Up blog, FindMeATent and FindMeAGPS and he just so happens to be a cousin of Rowan Nairn - the feed grazing maestro. Brains obviously run in the family.
I don't know where he gets the time but Robin is now developing a very interesting new software service for podcasters and podcast listeners alike. He's posted some screenshots and you'll find a thorough explanation here -
How will Comment Casting work?
- Podcaster’s will read out a phone number and ID.
- Listeners will ring the number and enter the ID (selecting dialplan extension to signify which podcast they are referencing).
- They will be given a 1 minute time slot to record a comment on the show.
- Their comment will be kept in a moderation area until approved by the Podcaster.
- 2 RSS feeds will be generated, one with the comments only, and another with combined comments & podcasts allowing listeners to subscribe to either option.
As Robin explained to me on Saturday night, he got the idea when he was in the car and heard something on a podcast that he just wanted to comment on there and then. There was no point in waiting until he got home to record an MP3 on his PC and submit it via email - it wouldn't have been the same thing. Just as with live radio, a phone-in while the topic is hot has much more energy and passion than something recorded after the event. Strike while the iron is hot.
Robin is onto something big and I'll be watching this with interest.
