I don't like to duplicate the content on this blog but Walter's reply to my last post is too quotable to wallow in the depths of the comments section -
"Ireland has an abundance of geeks/talent but try getting geeks and rich-people together in the same room. Ok - it happened at the recent web2.0 event in the Helix but I didn't see much informal chatter between the two groups.
Irish VC thinks: "so that's what a geek looks like..."
Irish geek thinks: "so that's what a VC looks like..."Geeks mixing amongst themselves is one thing - what we really need
is a particle collider to get Irish Geeks and Irish Rich people (god
knows there seems to be enough of them) to inhabit the same space for
more than a few hours."
hey, talking of Irish VCs -- check this out: http://paul.kedrosky.com/archives/2006/05/16/trashing_euro_v.html

As a foreigner who came to Ireland to work in IT, I was very surprised about the fact that ITpeople/nerds/geeks do not get a lot together here in Ireland. You have it all : a capital which is not too big (easier to get together in Dublin then in the valley), hundreds of people employed or dealing in some ways with IT, and enough money (all right, maybe not as much as in california but anyway more then the European average)
I guess that people who are ready to pay 340 pounds for the London Media Conference, would be happy to pay the half for something similar in Dublin. Or not?

Maybe one way to do it would be to get a 'uniform' for everybody at these events (trousers-not-jeans, shirt but no ties).
At the Web2Ireland event it was obvious who was who:
- geeks : jeans and T-Shirt
- VC's : Suit , Shirt and Tie
- Unsure: Suit ,Shirt and no tie

And that's before we start talking about the biggest conference to hit Dublin this year (and only the 2nd Apache Conference in Europe since 2000).
