When Walter Higgins asked me, back in November, if I was going to Le Web 3 in Paris I said I'd love to but couldn't justify the expense. Later that day I started wondering if maybe I could or should - it seemed like too good a networking opportunity to miss out on.
Thankfully I decided against it in the end. I don't mean to pile on the criticism but seeing as I helped hype it up in the first place and I feel very sorry for the Irish startups who wasted their resources, it's only fair to point to some of their objections. Conor O'Neill of LouderVoice -
"Did my attendance fee pay for the security for Shimon Peres and the French presidential candidates?... Was I at Le Web or Les Grands Buddies de Loic?.... The trip cost us well over €1000 in total and I had thought long and hard about whether to go or not."
Walter Higgins of Sxoop -
"I didn’t pay to hear a party political broadcast by french
politicians. I’m not a french citizen so I don’t care.... I didn’t pay €359 for this... I won’t be coming back"
Joe Drumgoole of PutPlace.com -
"The whole thing leaves a bad taste in my mouth."
I'm quoting from these entrepreneurs because they're operating in penny-pinching startup mode and the last thing they want to waste is time and money.
