It seems that the proviso 'your mileage may vary' could hardly be more accurately applied than to Paypal.
Karlin raves (welcome back Karlin!) while Bernie rants. My own experience is somewhere in between but probably nearer to Karlin on the spectrum of satisfaction.
From what I've read on the various Paypalsucks sites it seems that if you're unlucky with them they can indeed be a big pain. I must say though that in our experience of using them as one of two payment option on our e-commerce website for the last two years we've had no real problems. Sometimes their payment notification emails are slow to arrive, which can result in angry emails from new subscribers to our services, but other than that the irritations have been mild.
Having said that it was a relief to eventually be able to move our Paypal funds into our AIB account, last week. I'm not sure why that is really but I think Paypal funds seem just a little too virtual at times. Now that two years worth of revenues have suddenly taken on a physical form (or at least a more trusted virtual one) we may be less anxious about storing funds with Paypal in future. (Yes, I see the irony in applying the word 'trusted' to AIB ;-)
As I say we've also used 2CheckOut.com for a number of years which has been a mostly positive experience. On the other hand we recently applied to WorldPay for a full merchant account and it's been a very bad start to our relationship. Not only did the application take nearly a month to process but we discovered that their account management interface is fairly pathetic compared with 2CheckOut and Paypal. I'll report back here regularly on how our business relationship develops.
